Piash Karim laid to rest at Banani graveyard

BRAC University professor and political analyst Dr. Piash Karim was laid to rest at Banani graveyard in the capital on Friday afternoon.

His second Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Baitul Mukarram Mosque in the capital.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member MK Anwar, Mirza Abbas, Bangladesh Bank former governor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, journalist Mahfujullah, journalist leader Ruhul Amin Gazi, Jamaat central leader Selim Uddin were present at the janaza.

Moulana Salauddin Ahmed conducted prayer after janaza.

Meanwhile, the first namaj-e-janaza of Piash Karim was held at Baitul Aman Mosque as per the wish of the family.

Those who paid respect to Prof Piash Karim at Dhanmondi included former Dhaka University VC Prof Emajuddin Ahmed, Prof Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Poet and philosopher Farhad Mazhar, Bangladesh Bar Council vice-chairman and Supreme Court Bar Association president Khondker Mahbub Hossain, journalist Mahfuz Ullah, BNP standing committee member Gayweshar Chandra Roy, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, former president of Dhaka University Teachers Association Prof Sadrul Amin, DUTA vice--president Dr Akhtar Hossain, Prof Salimullah Khan, Prof Asif Nazrul, Prof ABM Obaidul Islam, Dr Asaduzzaman, BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi, Jatiya Press Club general secretary Abdal Ahmed, Sanmilito Peshajibi Parishad member secretary Dr AZM Zahid, former ministers Abdul Mannan and Noor Mohammad Khan, Dhaka Union of Journalists president Poet Abdul Hye Sikder, Dr Tuhin Malik, BNP leader Sharafat Ali Shapu, Begum Selima Rahman, women's leader Shirin Sultana, composer Gazi Mazharul Anwar, film actor Ujjal, Helal Khan, Muniara Safa, Shyama Obaid, BNP leader BD Rahmatullah and left leader Junayed Saki, among others.

On October 13, Piash Karim, died of cardiac arrest around 3:am at his Dhanmondi residence.

Piash Karim is survived by wife Amena Mohsin, a professor at Dhaka University’s International Affairs Department, and one son.
 
Hailing from Comilla, Piash Karim was also known as Manjur Karim. He obtained his PhD in Sociology from Kansas State University, USA.
 
According to the BRAC University website, his specializations include Political Economy, Political Sociology, Nationalism and Social Theory.
