A Dhaka court on Wednesday turned down a bail petition of a Supreme Court lawyer in a defamation case filed for questioning integrity of a top court judge.
Refusing the plea, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman sent Barrister Ashraful Islam, the lawyer, to Dhaka Central jail.
The criticism of the lawyer against Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik was aired on ATN Bangla in 2012.
Ashraf's wife Doctor Masura Aktar in a press briefing at Supreme Court Bar Association building claimed that her husband, a leader of United Kingdom Awami League, was arrested at airport without any warrant. She suspected that an influential quarter might be involved in the arrest of Ashraf. 
In 2012, a High Court bench led by Justice Manik summoned Ashraf for his comment against the judge. But the order was stayed by the Appellate Division later.
