An expatriate Bangladeshi living in the United Kingdom was sent to jail on Monday in a defamation case filed by a lawyer for making audacious remarks against a Supreme Court judge.

Barrister Ashraful Islam was sent to jail by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court  in a defamation case filed against him after he made derogatory remarks on Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik on ATN Bangla in the United Kingdom in 2012.

Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman passed the above order Monday afternoon.

Earlier on Monday morning, he was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) police from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport premises after he returned home from the UK.

The case against him is that the United Kingdom Chapter of ATN Bangla on June 7, 2012 aired a news item against Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik under the influence of accused Barrister Ashraful Islam and others.

Later, it was aired through YouTube whole over the world including Dhaka.

In this connection, Advocate Mahbubul Islam filed a case with the CMM Court against six Bangladeshi expatriates including Head of News of ATN Bangla, United Kingdom Chapter and Ashraful Islam under Section 500/501/502/109 of the penal code.

No lawyers stood for him in the court as he did not agree to appoint lawyers.
