Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Islam, Chairman of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies of Dhaka University, was suspended on Monday evening on charge of sexually harassing a female student of his department.

The decision to suspend the teacher was taken at an emergency meeting convened by the Dhaka University syndicate in the evening following a daylong movement by students. DU vice-chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said at the meeting that Professor Dr. Md. Saiful Islam was suspended from all academic and administrative works.

An inquiry committee was also formed to investigate the matter.
During the syndicate meeting, the students formed a human-chain in front of the senate building wearing black clothes around their faces. Another group of students held Dr Saiful Islam hostage at his room at the 5th floor of the Arts Faculty Building.
Earlier, Dr. Md. Saiful Islam resigned from his post on charge of sexual harassment of a female student of the department, claiming that he was victim of a 'deep-rooted' conspiracy.

He submitted his resignation letter to the DU Registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman in the wake strong protests by students over the allegation of sexual harassment of a female student.

The furious 4th year students of the department confined the teacher from 10:00am to 12:00pm demanding his resignation.

The students claimed that the chairman had called a 4th year female student of his department to his residence after alluring her to show her marks obtained in the examinations.

The victim said that the chairman had asked her to meet the departmental head several times since September 8 citing that she obtained poor marks in the examination.

Later on September 13, Dr Saiful Islam called her over mobile phone and she went to meet him at his residence at around 3:53pm finding no other way.

When the student had been at the teacher's residence on Saturday, the teacher asked her to get indulge in sexual activities with him with the assurance that she would be given more marks. But, showing the courage, the student vehemently protested it and managed to get out of the residence. She then informed the matter to her fellow classmates.
