State Minister for Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MOWCA), Meher Afroz Chumki, on Tuesday distributed Tk 6 lakh and 75 thousands by cheque to 3325 women, members of Volunteer Women Samittee.
"We must know that when women become financially solvent, they can change the whole structure of the family. Even they can take their own decisions. Therefore, women need to be educated and financially sound," said Meher Afroz Chumki.
His comment came at a cheque distribution programme among marginal and poor women organised by MOWCA at the National Women Association auditorium.
Officials of the MOWCA said the main aim of this monetary assistance among the grassroots women is to make them socio-economically independent.
State Minister for Women and Children Affairs said Bangladesh has become a middle income country due to women's participation in the national economy of the country.
She also said that at present country's per capital income is US $ 1200 and for becoming a country a middle income, the per capital income should be above US $ 1000.
However, the Volunteer Women Samittee is also playing an important role in combating poverty faced by marginal people in the country.
