Dhaka South City Corporation has not yet stopped realizing extra toll from vehicles using the Gulistan-Jatrabari flyover even after receiving directives from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
"We are scrutinizing the figure of vehicles and the amount of toll mentioned by the construction firm Orion Group," Khan Mohammad Rezaul Karim, secretary of DSCC, told The Daily Observer yesterday.
After scrutiny, we will go for action against those who are involved in the realization of extra toll, he added.
The PMO has given the directive to the DSCC acting on a report prepared by the intelligence agencies.
The report mentioned that extra toll is being collected from the vehicles which is twice and sometime thrice the amount of the government fixed rate. As a result, only a few vehicles are using the flyover which is creating tailback under the flyover as before.
The report said transport workers are realizing Tk 5.0 to Tk 10 extra fare from passengers for using the flyover. To avoid this hassle many vehicles are using the road under the flyover.
With the help of a section of corrupt officials of the DSSC, toll collection authority (Orion Group) are realizing extra toll from people. On the issue of extra toll collection, heated words have been exchanged even brawls occurred between the transport workers and Group employees, according to the intelligence report.
The report apprehended that if the issue is not finalized soon it will create adverse impact on the people and may bring negative result for the government in the next general election.
The report in its recommendation said, the toll collection authority should be forced to realize government fixed toll rates and suggested punitive measures against the corrupt officials of the DSCC.
DSCC, however, formed a committee to scrutinize toll collection from the flyover on February 10.
Besides, the DSCC on January 30 engaged 48 officials to count vehicles manually using Hand Tally Counting Device.
