Our Correspondent : LALMONIRHAT, Feb 4: From a simple employee of mobile company in Lalmonirhat district the former state minister Moatahar Hossain's son Mahmudul Hasan Sohag turned out to be a multimillionaire allegedly by taking evil ways.
He is now one of five multimillionaires in Hatibandha upazila. It was possible only because he had handled tenders, primary teachers' recruitment, bridge's toll collection, stone lifting from rivers and transferring govt officials taking the advantage of his identity as the son of a former state minister of primary and mass communication Motahar Hossain during recent Awami regime.
He owns a number of land properties at Patgram, Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat town, Rangpur city and the capital. He has also become owner of three houses at Hatibandha upazila, another house at Rangpur city and a flat in Dhaka city. He had purchased two plots totalling 142 decimal beside Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway at Patgram and Hatibandha upazilas to construct pump depot and cold storage. He also purchased huge arable lands at his native village Barakahat and Saniyazan, and at Patikapara village of Hatibandha upazila.
And he has lot of cash money in his hand and banks.
Local AL men said, the former state minister's son Mahmudul Hasan Sohag came back at Hatibandha resigning his mobile company's job in capital when his father Motahar Hossain was selected as state minister for primary and mass communication in 2009. After a year, minsiter's son Sohag formed a bahini named "Sohag Bahini" with 25 members of BCL and Jubo League at Hatibandha upazila. This Bahini members communicated all the govt offices especially LGED and WDB to maintain tenders in the name of Sohag, they said adding the minister's son Sohag also locally called Juboraj. "We think former state minister's son Sohag becomes owner of at least hundred Crs of taka in the last five years, but before the time he had no money in his pocket," they said adding no body at Hatibandha and Patgram upazila dare to stand against his corruption. For ensure son's dignity in the party, the former state minister Motahar Hossain made his son as general secretary of Hatibandha upazila unit AL through an eye wash election in the last year, they alleged.
All the big tenders of LGED and WDB were snatched by Sohag bahini and he handled his tender activities taking help BNP backed contractor Abdul Hakim and AL contractor Rantu Islam, local said claiming Sohag earned huge money illegally in primary teacher's recruitment in the last five years.
