Shanto Kairy : Dhaka University Central Student's Union (DUCSU) is the representative body of the students of University of Dhaka. No DUCSU election has taken place since 1990. The executive body of DUCSU is elected for a term of one year.
The last DUCSU election was held on July 6, 1990. On may 27, 1998, the university authority dissolved the DUCSU Executive Commitee of 1990-91. After that no election was held till this date. Students of Dhaka university pay a fee of Tk 60 each year for DUCSU.
DUCSU had played a leading role in shaping the history of our country including the language movement in 1952, the education movement in 1962,the great mass upsurge of 1969 and the liberation war in 1971.
It also played a major role in rebuilding the war-torn Bangladesh in the first half of the 1970s. Rising against the Ershad regime and leading the democratic revolution from the front was another success of DUCSU.
Dhaka University Students Rights Platform (DUSRP), a pro-DUCSU election group of students, sent served a legal notice in 2012 to Dhaka University Adminstration demanding immediate DUCSU election.. Vice-chancellor of the university A.A.M.S Arefin Siddique had promised that the election would be held in a short time, but no singnificant steps were taken. DUSRP members observed a day-long strike on July 19, 2012 demanding election of Hall Committees, but they got no response from the university authrities.
"As DUCSU is a democratic representative body of the general students of the university, the election should be held within a short time or we will continue our movement againts the adminstration" Samia Rahman, President of the Dhaka university unit of Bangladesh Students Federation said.
General students of Dhaka university allege that students wings of powerful political parties dominate the university with muscle power. This is all the more true for the students of the ruling parties. They blame the adminstration for not conducting DUCSU election. "A vacuum like this encourages autocracy of the adminstration and teachers", said a student. "This also gives rise to autocracy of the ruling parties and their stooges on the campus", he added.
Immediate election of DUCSU is the most popular slogan among students of Dhaka university. Students hope that the new government will take necessary steps to conduct a peaceful  DUCSU election as soon as possible.
