The body of a student was found floating in a pond near Shah Azizur Rahman Hall at Islamic University (IU) on Thursday evening.

The body was recovered around 6:30 PM in the presence of the university security cell and law enforcement personnel.

Classmates identified the deceased as Sajid Abdullah, a student from 2021-22 session of Al-Quran and Islamic Studies department.

Sajid Abdullah was a resident of room 109 at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall. He is from Ghatail upazila in Tangail district.

Akmal Hossain, a shopkeeper near the pond, said, “Around noon, I noticed something floating that looked like pants. Later, during Asr prayer time, I saw a head floating and that’s when the news spread.”

Dr. Md. Shahed stated, “This likely happened 4-5 hours ago. No pulse was found.”

IU Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mehedi Hasan said, “We received a call from the university authorities and the emergency response team came to the scene. After recovering the body, we sent it to the university medical center to confirm whether the person was alive. Later, the doctor on duty referred him to Kushtia. We expect to receive final confirmation regarding his condition from there.”
