A total of 61 fishermen have been arrested and fined at Hijla in Barishal district for fishing during the prohibited time in the Meghna River sanctuary.
Hijla Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mohammad Alam confirmed the matter on Monday (March 25) afternoon.
He said, Directorate of Fisheries, Upazila Administration, RAB-8, River Police (Hijla Outpost) conducted a joint operation in various areas in the Meghna River of the upazila. During the operation, 61 fishermen were arrested for fishing in the sanctuary of the Meghna river.
Later, among the detainees, a mobile court sentenced seven persons to one month's imprisonment, 52 persons to 15 days' imprisonment and fined two of the detainees Tk 5,000 each.
The mobile court was conducted by Hijla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Sudipta Kumar Singh.
The official added that Hijla River Police outpost in-charge Tariqul Islam Talukdar, Barishal's RAB-8 DAD Jamal Uddin, Hijla Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Rafiqul Islam and other forces were present during the raid.
