Four killed in road accidents in city

A man in his 70s and a boy as young as 11 are among four people who have lost their lives in separate road accidents in Dhaka. Two individuals passed away in Mohammadpur, while the remaining two lost their lives in Banani and Jatrabari on Thursday night.

Two children were thrown off a motorcycle near Mayur Villa adjacent to Mohammadpur Bus Stand around 11:45 pm. Three individuals were riding the motorcycle.
Trader Abdul Hai Liton closed his shop around 11:00 pm and was heading home to Waspur from Mohammadpur Town Hall with his son Rifat, 11, and brother-in-law Fahad, 17, riding a motorbike.

"A covered van struck the motorbike from the rear when it reached Mayur Villa adjacent to Mohammadpur Bus Stand," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Azizul Islam. All three riders were thrown off and fell onto the road, with Rifat dying on the spot. Fahad was taken to Popular Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning. Police seized the covered van and arrested its driver, Abu Zahid Raju.

In another incident, Shahjahan, 72, a pedestrian, died after an unidentified vehicle struck him at the Kakoli intersection in Banani around 10:00 pm on Thursday, according to Kazi Shahan Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Banani Police Station.

"The pedestrian, a private service holder, was involved in an accident while crossing the street." Police were still searching for the vehicle that hit Shahjahan.

Meanwhile, another pedestrian, Abul Kalam Azad, died in yet another road accident when an unidentified vehicle hit him on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, according to Jatrabari Police Station chief Forman Ali. However, the officer could not provide further details about the deceased.
