Jahangirnagar University, Bangladeshs first full-fledged residential public university, was established on January 12, 1970, on 697.56 acres of land, 32 kilometers from Dhaka. Originally conceived in the 1960s, it faced challenges in choosing a location until the present site was chosen in 1967, with 750 acres allocated from a government Dairy Farm.
Initiated as Jahangirnagar Muslim University in April 1968, academic programmes commenced in 1970 under Vice-Chancellor Prof Mofizuddin Ahmed. Originally planned with five faculties, it started with four honours departments and two minor departments.
The universitys inauguration on January 12 in 1971, marked the beginning of its academic journey. Active participation in the Liberation Movement of Bangladesh furthered its momentum. Prof Syed Ali Ahsan became the second Vice-Chancellor in 1972, and the Jahangirnagar University Act was enacted on October 8 in 1973.
Functioning as a residential institution, the university provides accommodation and a monthly stipend to every student. Financial support is extended to top-performing students. Emphasizing inclusivity, the university operates autonomously under the Syndicate and Senate, ensuring transparency and accountability.
The Senate plays a vital role in approving the budget and selecting a panel for the Vice-Chancellors appointment. The Chancellor appoints the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-vice Chancellors, and Treasurer. The universitys governance structure underscores transparency, accountability, and inclusivity.
The campus boasts a Central Library, Mosque, Gymnasium, Swimming Pool, and Cafeteria. Transportation is provided by university buses. Iconic structures like the Central Shaheed Minar and the Muktamanch contribute to its cultural richness.
As of January of 2023, Jahangirnagar University has 38 departments of six faculties and four institutes. It provides accommodation in eleven male and ten female dormitories, hosting around 15,000 students, including M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes, with 650 dedicated teachers. The comprehensive infrastructure positions it as a prominent hub for education, research and intellectual growth.
