Egg sale at discount rate marred by chaos
The egg selling programme at special discount of Taka 3 each has been suspended within half-an-hour of the beginning following pandemonium.
Marking the World Egg Day on Friday, Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) has announced to sale each egg at special discount of Taka 3 between 10am to 1pm.
Following the announcement, hundreds of people have started gathering at the Krishibid Institution at Khamarbari this morning that created a chaotic situation.
After half-an hour of starting the sale at 9:30am, the orgarniers have compelled to suspend the trading because of excessive pressure of consumers at 10am. As a result, egg seekers leave the place empty handed.
The makeshift stage made for distributing eggs broke down because of pushing and shoving by consumers that also damaged eggs.
Agitated egg seekers staged demonstration, worsening the situation. Police charged batons on the gathering to take control over the situation.
Later, BPICC member Bishwajit Roy over microphone announced the suspension of the programme requesting all to leave the place.
He also promised to arrange such event at an extended manner.
BPICC media advisor M Sajjad Hossain said that the gathering was beyond their expectation.
Regretting the unwanted situation, its President Mashiur Rahman said,"We brought one lakh eggs for selling. But, don't know how many of these were distributed. We've suspended distribution considering the situation which proved that people responded to our programme."
