Elderly woman held with Saudi riyals worth Tk 5.2m
An elderly woman was held with 2.49 Saudi riyal, worth around Tk 52.29 lakh (Tk 5.2 million), at the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the city on Thursday.
Sources at the airport said Khadiza Begum, a 70-year-old woman, was scheduled to fly for Chittagong by a flight of Regent Airways in the morning, reports UNB.
When she went to the check-in counter of domestic terminal at around 8:30 am, members of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) challenged her, said CIID Director General Dr Moinul Khan.
As she denied carrying any foreign currency with her, the CIID team took her to the customs hall of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and performed a body search that sure enough, led to the loot.
During preliminary interrogation, she revealed that one Sohel handed the foreign currency consignment to her and asked her to carry it till Chittagong airport. She was promised Tk 100,000 for it, Dr Moinul said quoting the old woman.
CIID suspect the seized foreign currency was about to be smuggled out of the country through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport.
