Aiming to keep market stable, Bangladesh Bank has sold US dollar 7 million to two commercial banks directly, officials said.

A senior official of the central bank said that it has sold the US currency to the banks at market rate on Thursday to settle their import payment obligations particularly, reports a business-based news portal in Dhaka.

However, the exchange rate of US dollar remained unchanged at BDT 80.80 each in the inter-bank forex market on the day.

BB’s latest data said total of $231 million was sold since July 01 of this fiscal year (FY) 2017-18 to the commercial banks as part of its ongoing support.

The demand for the US currency is increasing gradually, mainly due to higher import payments pressure, particularly of capital machinery, petroleum products and consumer items including food grains, according to the market operators.
