1,000-metre current net seized in Natore

NATORE, Aug 12: A mobile court here seized 1,000 metres of illegal current net from Halti Beel (water body) on Thursday night.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Naldanga Md. Reza Hasan seized the nets after conducting a drive at different places of the beel.
At that time, Upazila Fisheries Officer Ibrahim Hamid Shahin and Sub-Inspector (SI) of Naldanga Police Station Rezaul Islam were also present.
Later, the seized nets were burnt.
According to Upazila Fisheries office, the mobile court conducted the drive at Halti Beel on Thursday night when 1,000 metres of current net were seized from different areas of the beel. But none claimed ownership of the nets during the drive.
Upazila Fishery Officer Ibrahim Hamid Shahin confirmed the incident and said, a class of dishonest people have been catching fishes in the beel using illegal current nets for long. As a result, mother and young fishes are being killed. So, the mobile court was conducted to save the fish.
But hearing the news of the drive, the fish hunters fled from the spot.
The drive will continue, he said.
