Advance sale of bus tickets for Eid-ul-Azha will begin from August 18, Bangladesh Bus Truck Owners' Association President Farooque Talukder told journalists on Saturday.
The advance tickets will be available for homebound inter-district passengers at the bus counters in the city terminals.
Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest festival of the Muslims, is scheduled to be celebrated either on September 2 or the next day, subject to the sighting of the Zilhaj moon. Millions of people leave the capital, Dhaka, to celebrate Eid with their near and dear ones at their ancestral homes every year. But, their journey turns bitter largely due to traffic jam, overcharging of ticket prices and delays in bus and train schedules.
Bus owners said this year the demand for tickets from August 30 and 31 is higher than other days. Meanwhile, the date for advance sale of train tickets could not be fixed yet.
Rail Minister Muzibul Haque said, "The date for advance sale of train tickets is yet to be fixed. Media will be informed once the date is fixed."
Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association (BPWA) Secretary General Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said transport owners charged extra fares from homebound passengers ahead of festivals. This trend should be stopped to ensure a hassle free journey during the Eid. He said some 80 lakh people left Dhaka to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr at their village homes. Public transport shortage was 33.44 per cent against the demand of the passengers.
As a result, the sufferings of the passengers reached its height.  Despite repeated pleas to the authorities concerned to take measures to stop anarchy in the transport sector during Eid, he said, no pragmatic steps have been taken to mitigate the sufferings of the passengers.
