Man held with 140 gold bars in city

Dhaka: Customs intelligence personnel arrested a man along with 140 gold bars worth around Tk eight crore from Baitul Mukarram Jewellery Market in the city on Saturday evening.

The detainee is identified as Rabiul Islam, 35, son of Nurul Islam, hails from Purba Boalkhali village under Sadar upazila of Cox's Bazar.

Md Shahiduzzaman, assistant director of customs intelligence, confirmed the matter.

"We have arrested one Rabiul Islam along with 140 gold bars weighting 16.24 kilograms from Baitul Mukarram Jewellery Market," Md Shahiduzzaman said.

Bangladesh Jewellery Samity assisted the customs intelligence to nab Rabiul, who is believed to be a carrier and went to the market to sell those, he added.

The estimated cost of the seized gold bars is Taka 8 crore, he also said.
