Two US scientists-- Dr Keith Lividini and Ms Caitlin Herrington-- visited Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) in Gazipur on Thursday.
The scientists working for HarvestPlus, a Washington DC based development body, presented two research papers at the BRRI auditorium. Country Manager of HarvestPlus-Bangladesh Dr Md Khairul Bashar and BRRI Director (Administration and Common Service) Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir were with them while BRRI Director (Research) Dr Ansar Ali conducted the seminar.
The visiting scientists have been in Bangladesh from 12 to 25 June to meet with colleagues and stakeholders to plan an adoption survey on bio-fortified zinc rice varieties in connection to the HarvestPlus-Bangladesh programme. The survey is aimed at developing an idea on how these varieties have been adopted by farmer communities and in which direction the next strategies for related research and promotional activities should be directed. In this regard they met with BRRI management as well as the scientists and officials with a view to share their ideas and opinions.
The visiting scientists gave presentations on "The cost-effectiveness of bio-fortification: a case study of high zinc rice in Bangladesh, an ex-ante simulation' from 11 am to 1:00 pm. In addition the team engaged in a lively discussion with the breeders of the institute involved in zinc rice development in the afternoon.
