Banani Rape Case
Video footage recovered from Shafat
The investigator recovered the video footage of rape of two girls from rapist Shafat Ahmed, son of Apan Jewellers' owner Dilder Ahmed Salim, police sources said on Friday.
Shafat had invited the two students of a private university to his birthday party at Banani's Raintree Hotel on March 28. On arrival at the hotel, Shafat and his accomplice Nayem Ashraf Halim forcibly took the girls to two separate rooms and raped them at gunpoint, police quoted the victims as saying.
The rape victims will also filed another case under the ICT Act against Shafat Ahmed and others.
Shafat and his friend Shadman Sakif on Tuesday confessed to their involvement in the rape of the two girls before the two metropolitan magistrates in the sensational Banani rape case.
Shafat "admitted" that he and his cohort Nayem Ashraf alias Halim raped the two private university girls in Raintree Dhaka Hotel.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ahsan Habib recorded Shafat's confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), court sources said.
Shafat's accomplice Shadman Shakif, another accused in the case, also confessed to crime, the sources added.
During preliminary interrogation by the detectives, Halim confessed to his involvement in the rape incident.
Monirul Islam, Deputy Inspector General of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: "We have just started questioning the main accused. We'll know what happened at the hotel by quizzing the accused," said the DMP official.
The Raintree Hotel is owned by the children of ruling Awami League MP Bazlul Haque Haroon.
A probe committee has been formed over the victims' allegation that police initially refused to record their case.
