Army lifts champion trophy

Bangladesh Army had clinched the title of ATN Bangla National Hockey Gold Cup 2017 with a hard fought 5-4 win over Bangladesh Navy in the penalty shootout in the final after the regular time saw a 3-3 draw on Thursday at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium in Dhaka.
In the stipulated time, Hasan Zubayer Niloy sounded the board twice while Manoz Babu hit the middle of the post once for the Army team. In reply, Navy's Roman Sarker, Ashraful and striker Russel Mahmud Jimmy scored one goal each.  
In the meantime, Dhaka district placed third beating Dhaka Education Board by 5-1 margin in the place decider on the day.
Earlier on Sunday, Dhaka district, Bangladesh Army, Dhaka Education Board and Bangladesh Navy eliminated their rivals in the quarterfinals and confirmed spot in the semi-finals.
The semi-finalists had to play two matches on Monday to decide the semi-final line-up where Navy became Group-B champion beating Army by 3-0 goals and Dhaka district team became Group-A champion beating Dhaka Education Board by 5-4 margin in the sudden death after the regular match saw a 2-2 draw.
Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh Navy were set to play the final as the Army boys routed Dhaka district by 4-0 goals in the first semi-final on Wednesday while Sailor team overpowered Dhaka Education Board by 4-3 margin in the second semi-final.
On Thursday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, MP handed over the prizes among the winners as the chief guest. Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Admin) Air Vice Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat, OSP, ndu, psc was present in the prize giving ceremony as special guest.
Champions Army boys received the trophy and Tk 100,000 while runners-up Navy boys got trophy and Tk 50,000 as prize money. The third placers also got Tk 20,000 while the player of the tournament Shafiqul Islam and highest scorer Milon Hossain, who scored a total of 35 goals, received Tk 10,000 each.
