President Abdul Hamid on Thursday called upon the authorities concerned to take steps to create a welfare-oriented and child-friendly environment in the country and make government facilities available for children, particularly the underprivileged ones.
"We want to see the children as the real successors of our dream. A welfare-oriented, balanced and child-friendly atmosphere must be created to take the facilities of a standard life to the doorsteps of underprivileged children," he said.
The President was addressing a prize distribution ceremony at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium in the capital.
He said it must be ensured that children can avail themselves of the facilities of the government initiatives taken to build Digital Bangladesh.
Noting that nutrition, education, healthcare, security and entertainment are must for physical, mental and cultural development of children, Hamid said they must be grown up with the spirit of patriotism and human values apart from ensuring their basic rights.
Advising children to practise integrity, he said, "Never commit any injustice and always remain alert so that nobody can indulge in wrongdoing. And then, you'll ill be successful in life."
Highlighting the government's initiatives taken for the development of children, the President said the present government has given a special emphasis on them to materialise the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Textbooks are being distributed free among children, he said, adding that the government has already formulated the National Children Policy 2011, which will play an important role in ensuring their welfare.
Terming disabled and autistic children an integral part of society, he said they must be brought in the mainstream of society without considering them as a burden.
"They (the challenged children) should be given proper scopes for their mental growth. You must assist them to turn themselves into human resources...it's not possible to ensure the overall development of children by only formulating laws and charters. We must change our mindset in this regard," the President said.
He asked guardians, philanthropists and public and private organisations, which work on children, to take children-friendly programmes so that they can flourish their potentials.
President Hamid also distributed prizes among the winners of the National Children Award Competition 2017.
