PM urges Myanmar to take back its nationals from Bangladesh

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday renewed her call to Myanmar to take back its nationals from Bangladesh as visiting Myanmar Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin called on her at Ganabhaban this evening.

During the meeting, the prime minister said the two countries could permanently solve the refugee problem through discussion.

After the meeting, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated Bangladesh's "zero tolerance policy" against terrorism and mentioned that Bangladesh won't allow its soil to be used for terrorist acts against any of its neighbours.

"Bangladesh doesn't allow any armed groups of insurgents to use its territory against any of its neighbours," the press secretary quoted the premier as saying.

Expressing satisfaction over the existing ties between the two neighbours, Sheikh Hasina reaffirmed that Bangladesh values its relations with neigbours.

"I would do whatever is necessary for further strengthening the ties with Myanmar," she said.

Highlighting stunning socioeconomic development of Bangladesh, the prime minister said Myanmar could learn from Bangladesh experiences in this development.

The prime minister invited Myanmar State Cousellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi to visit Bangladesh.

During the meeting U Kyaw Tin handed over a letter of Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said Myanmar wants to deepen its ties and cooperation with Bangladesh.

The state minister of Myanmar also laid emphasis on setting up a border liaison office terming this as very important for both countries.

Kyaw Tin also stressed the need for exchanging information between the border forces of the two countries.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Senior Secretary of the PMO Suraiya Begum, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and Myanmar Ambassador in Dhaka U Myo Myint Than were present on the occasion.

Earlier, the Myanmar minister of state for foreign affairs held a meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the state guest house Padma in the afternoon.

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque was present at the meeting, among others.
