BD elected president of APIS Working Group
Bangladesh has been elected president of the Working Group of Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (APIS) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Banamali Bhowmick, Director General of Information and Communication Technology Directorate (DoICT), will represent Bangladesh and perform as the president of the Working Group of APIS.
Official sources said Vietnam's representative proposed Bangladesh's name for the chair of the Working Group of APIS at its second meeting held at Guangzhou of China, marking the two-day conference from August 29-30, 2016 on 'Strengthening Regional Information and Communication Technology Connectivity through the APIS'.
The representatives of other countries, including members ESCAP Working Group and Steering Group and international and regional partners, attended the meeting and unanimously supported the proposal of the Vietnam representative.
The meeting also elected China and the Philippines as vice-chairs. Representatives from 49 countries, including international organisations, attended this year's conference.
Banamali Bhowmick at the conference said it is a great honour for Bangladesh to be elected president of the APIS Working Group. —UNB
