RU: Database of snake poison
Prof Dr Md Abu Reza, a teacher of Generic Engineering and Biotechnology of Rajshahi University (RU) has created country's first snake poison database, since 2010, he started his research on this subject.
He created this database by researching snake venom for about 9 years, including local and international names, food, type- nature and bio-data of snakes found inside the country.
Full description of each snake poison found in Bangladesh has been given in this database. We have stored poison of different poisonous snakes according to nature and type in this database collecting information from various places. This database can be found on the established website (www.snakebd.com), said prof Abu Reza.
The details information of poison about 89 snakes including Kalnagini, Gokhra, Kalo Holud Band Lati, Mohnar Lati, Shankini and Dhaman and What type of venom can be used to bite a snake, are now available at this website.
Answering a question of journalist about the purpose of making this database, Prof Reza said, we usually go to NCBI to search for various aspects of snake protein. It is difficult to find specific venom out from it. If anyone want to find cardoToxin at our database, it will be very easy to find it out. Here we have shown a structure by analyzing proteins of Venom in about 3 hundred snake venoms. He believes that this database will help the researchers for researching about snake.
