Youth demo for climate held in Barishal
Hundreds of school students on Friday participated in a demonstration in Barishal demanding implementation of Paris Climate Accord and assurance of a safe future combating the impacts of climate change globally.
The demonstration titled "Friday For Future: Global Climate Strike", organised jointly by Youthnet for Climate Justice and ActionAid Bangladesh, was held on the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar in the city.
More than 300 students of three schools - Harbinger School from Dhaka, Nirala Adarsha High School from Khulna and Munshiganj Dakshinpara Govt Primary School from Satkhira -- participated in the programme which included a rally from the Ashwini Kumar Town Hall to the Central Shaheed Minar followed by a demonstration there.
Bangladesh Environment and Development Society also assisted in organising the event.
Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg, who has been nominated three Norwegian lawmakers for the Nobel Peace Prize for her prominent voice in campaigns against climate change, has been the pioneer in the global student demonstrations against the inaction of politicians regarding climate change.
Greta, a 16-year-old school student, began her lone protest outside Sweden's parliament on August 20, 2018, holding a hand-written plackard saying "SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE". Some of her school mates also joined her in the protest which went on to receive worldwide attention. -Agencies
