Upazila Parishad Election
KHULNA, Mar 14: Election campaign has begun in all nine upazilas of the district from Thursday afternoon after 26 candidates received symbols for chairman posts, 43 for vice-chairmen posts and 36 for women vice-chairman posts from the returning officer at the deputy commissioner's office.
Of them, two AL candidates of Batiaghata and Phultala upazila parishad and one AL vice-chairman candidate of Dakop Upazila are going to be elected unopposed as opponent AL rival candidates withdrew their candidacy on Wednesday, last day of nomination paper withdrawal.
They are Akram Hossain and Ashraful Alam Khan, incumbent upazila chairmen of Fultala and Batiaghata upazila parishad, and Gauranga Prasad Roy, AL leader of Dakop Upazila. Ziaur Rahman, returning officer who is also additional deputy commissioner (general) of Khulna, confirmed the matter.
At least seven AL candidates with 'boat' symbol, 12 AL rivals and five from different parties are contesting for chairmen posts while 42 for vice-chairman and 36 for women vice-chairmen posts are contesting in nine upazila parishad of Khulna. Among them, the numbers contesting for chairmen posts are: Koyra two, Terokhada three, Rupsha five, Dumuria five, Dakop two, Dighalia three and Paikgachha four. The numbers for vice-chairman posts are: Koyra eight, Fultala three, Terokhada four, Batiaghata six, Rupsha six, Dumuria seven, Dighalia four and Paikgachha four.
The number for women vice chairman posts are: Koyra five, Fultala three, Terokhada four, Batiaghata five, Rupsha four, Dumuria four, Dakop three, Dighalia two and Paikgachha six.
The fourth phase upazila parishad election will be held in all nine upazilas of Khulna on March 31. Candidates and their supporters conducted election campaign after getting symbol at their respective upazilas through procession, rally, view-exchange meeting, leaflet distribution and poster hanging.
