Public hearing on gas price hike from Mar 11 to 14

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) is set to conduct a public hearing on gas price hike to offset the loss of gas distribution companies from March 11 to 14.
Five gas distribution companies of the country have submitted fresh applications to the energy regulator that includes industries, power, fertiliser, households and other customers for gas price hike up to 66 per cent.
"This is not at all a fresh proposal, before the general election there was a move to hike gas price but examining the sensitivity of price hike of the any essential product, the Prime Minister turned down the move," a senior official of the BERC told the Daily observer on Wednesday.
He said the Petrobangla is importing 500 mmcf of LNG from the international market for the last few months and supplying to the gas distributors.
"Government is losing huge amount of money from October 2017.Tthe government has so far spent Tk 4,400 crore for importing gas and regasification since September, 2018," Petrobangla official said.
The government is buying per cubic meter of LNG at Tk 32 and selling it at Tk 7.17.
"We are going to conduct the public hearing on gas distribution companies proposals, however, they wants 66 per cent hike on an average", a senior official of BERC said.
The price of domestic gas connection has been proposed to be raised to Tk 1,200 from Tk. 850 for two burners and Tk 1,000 from Tk. 800 for a single burner.
