At least 17 people were killed and four others wounded in a fire at a hotel in western New Delhi.

Police spokesman Mandeep Singh Randhawa says the fire broke out at the Arpit Palace Hotel in the Karol Bagh neighborhood of India's capital city early Tuesday.

Their medical conditions were not immediately known.

Fire officer Vijay Paul says 25 fire engines responded to the blaze, which has been extinguished, reports AP.

Paul says the fire engulfed most of the five-story hotel. He also says 35 people were rescued from the hotel.

The authorities are still investigating what is the cause behind the fire, Paul said.
