Corruption in haor: Charge sheet approved against 33

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday approved charges against 33 people in a case filed for irregularities and corruption in the construction work of embankment in Haor area of Sunamganj district.
Engineers, officials of Water Development Board (WDB), and contractors of crops protection embankment have been indicted in the charge sheet.
ACC's public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed the matter, reports a Bangla newspaper.
The charge sheet will soon be submitted to trial court, the ACC official added.
Sunamganj ACC office assistant director Faruq Ahmed lodged the case against 61 people with Sadar Police Station on July 2, 2017.
According to ACC, in April of 2017, as many as 154 haor's boro crop was inundated after crops protection embankments collapsed because of onrush of hill water and heavy rainfall. Then, allegation was raised of massive irregularities-corruption in constructing crops protection embankment.
In ACC investigation, it was found that 19 contractors and WDB's 14 officials embezzled Tk 8.14 crore. Due to their money misappropriation and negligence, farmers and people are affected financially in flood in the haor regions.
