Awami League has backtracked on its decision to give nomination to vice-chairman hopefuls in the upazila elections.
The party, however, will refund the aspirants the amount of money spent for collecting nomination form.
At first, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader on January 30 in a statement said the party would not nominate vice-chairman candidates for the purpose of a competitive poll as the archrival BNP and its alliance Jatiya Oikyafront declared not to vie for the upazila elections.
Later, on 4 February, the ruling party in a press release signed by AL Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap stated that they called upon the vice-chairman aspirants to purchase nomination form.
But AL on Friday night backtracked on giving party ticket to vice-chairman candidates.
Quader at a press conference on Saturday said the posts of vice-chairman and women vice-chairman will be open for contest as the BNP and its alliance Jatiya Oikyafront declared not to contest the upazila elections.
In four days, the AL sold 3,485 nomination forms for the posts of vice-chairman and women vice-chairman.
AL Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap said as the decision of nominating vice-chairman candidates changed, the party will refund the aspirants the money the party took for nomination papers.
The form money will be sent to their houses, he said.
