CWASA supply reaches 350 MLD
CHATTOGRAM, Jan 13: The volume of water supply of the Chattogram WASA has now reached to 350 million litres per day with beginning of the operation of 90 million litres capacity water treatment plant. Talking to the Daily Observer, the Managing Director of Chittagong WASA Engineer A K M Fazlullah said, the project has been implemented under the Chittagong Water Supply Improvement and Sanitation Project (CWSISP) at a cost Taka 1890.83 crore. He said that the production in the project began in the previous month adding 90 million litres to the supply network of the CWASA. "With the beginning of the project, the total volume of water supply has now reached to 350 million litres per day," MD said.
Fazlullah said, the CWSISP include, 90 million litres water treatment plant at Modunaghat at a cost of Taka 396 crore, installation of distribution and transmission line at a cost of Taka 775 crore, and master plan for drainage and sanitation for the Chattogram WASA of Taka 27 crore. The World Bank has financed the project, he said. The World Bank provided Taka 1494 crore, Bangladesh Government provided Taka 373 crore while the Chittagong WASA provided Taka 22 crore, Fazluulah said.
The Chattogram WASA is now supplying 350 MLD that include, 140 million litres of water from Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant, 90 million litres from Mohra water Treatment Plant, and 30 million litres from deep tube wells adding 90 million from CWSISP Project. Presently the Chattogram WASA can supply water to the 80 per cent of the residents.
Besides, the Chittagong WASA signed a contract with a joint venture company in May last year for construction of Transmission Main from Kalurghat to Patenga.
The contract is the package number W5 of the Chittagong Water Supply Improvement and Sanitation Project (CWSISP). The Joint venture firm include; Shaanxi Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering (SWEG) of China and The Civil Engineering Limited (TCEL), Bangladesh and Falgu Sandhani Limited (FSL) of Bangladesh. The project costing more than Taka 235 crore will be completed by 2020 next.
Besides, the Chittagong WASA has signed another contract with the foreign joint venture company for construction of Karnaphuli Water Supply Project-2 (KWSP-2) at Rangunia. The Karnaphuli Water Supply Project-2 is being implemented at Taka 44.91 billion. The (KWSP-2) with the production capacity of 140 million litres daily is being implemented with the financial and technical assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). NJS of Japan has been appointed as Consultant for the project. The project will be completed by 2021 next. Meanwhile, the Chittagong WASA has taken a Taka 1036 crore water plant project - Bhandal Jhuri Water Supply Project (BJWSP) - aiming to meet the growing water demand of city dwellers.
The construction work of the project will begin within December this year and the project will be completed by June 2022, WASA sources said.
The CWASA has already appointed South Korean consultant firms - Dong Myeong Engineering Consultants, Architecture Company Ltd and Korea and Consortium - and the firms will submit their reports before CWASA within July next.
A tender will be floated for the construction of physical works of the project by the first week of August next.
Of the total project cost of Taka 1,036 crore, Korean Exim Bank will finance Taka 754 crore as soft loan while Taka 262 crore will be given by the government exchequer and the rest of the amount of Taka 20 crore will be provided by the CWASA authority. The water plant project, which includes a 60-kilometre water transmission line, a water treatment plant and two water reservoirs, will generate some 60 million litres of water daily.
