Journalist beaten by prison guards
Five prison guards of Barishal Central Jail have been suspended for beating a journalist on Saturday afternoon.
The suspended prison guards are Ujjal Mia, Abu Bakor Siddique Khokon, Said Abul Khair and Kawsar, confirmed Barishal Central Jail sources.
Injured journalist Shamim Ahmed, photojournalist of Bangla daily Jugantor, told the journalists that he was shooting picture some of government aided sacks of wheat which was being carried on a rickshaw van in Sadar Road area near the central jail.
“Five or six persons were dragging me into the jail compound and were beating on my face. I was astonished and could do nothing. On information, journalist rescued me after several minutes,” he said.
Proshanta Kumar Banik, Senior Jail Super of Barishal Central Jail said, “We have found some of our jail guards hitting one of senior journalists in jail compound. We already suspended five jail guards preliminary, and divisional case would be filed.”
“The sacks of wheat were for prison guards’ mess, and this was sold normally” he added.
Barishal Reporters Unity and Sangbadik Union protested and condemned for beating and demanded proper punishment for them involved in the beating.
