Russel boys in quarters playing a goalless draw
Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra secured the group of eight playing a goalless draw against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in their last match of the group in the Independence Cup football on Saturday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
It was a 'do or die' match for the Jamal boys as they had zero point in their collection losing to group champions Bashundhara Kings by 2-0 in the first match. Russel boys had one point from a previous goalless match against the Bashundhara boys.
Since Sheikh Russel were in a comparatively better position in the group, they were quite relaxed on the day. Their coach Saiful Bari Titu who is known for his defensive style played the boys in 4-2-4 formation.
The highly defensive Russel boys merely put attacks in the first half while the Jamal boys came near to take a lead in the 19th minute. But a powerful shot of their Argentine striker Luciano Emanuel was bounced on the side-bar.
Luciano's another attempt was intercepted by Ashraful Islam Rana, the vigilant custodian of Sheikh Russel, in the 30th minute.
The Argentine's another shot went pass the left sidebar in the 78th minute.
However, Russel boys put a attempt to score in the dying minute of the match when their Uzbekistan striker Azizov received a pass of Brazil striker Alex yet he failed to utilise the opportunity.
There are two matches today (Sunday). Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society will meet newbie challengers of the first-tier league NoFeL Sporting Club in the first match at 3:00pm while the traditional black and white jerseys Mohammedan Sporting Club and Chittagong Abahani will play the last match of Group-B at 5:15pm at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
