Appoint more executive magistrates EC to ministry

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday directed the Public Administration Ministry to appoint adequate number of executive magistrates in 300 constituencies ahead of the 11th national polls.
The magistrates will remain stationed in those constituencies until the
next day of the elections.
The EC on Monday sent a letter signed by EC's Joint Secretary Farhad Ahammad Khan to the Ministry in this regard.
According to the EC instruction, an executive magistrate will be appointed in each upazila, one for three to four nearby wards in city corporation areas and one or two for municipal areas in district sadar.
Moreover, one magistrate will be appointed for closely situated 3 to 4 upazilas in hilly areas.
Apart from assistant returning officer, assistant commissioner (Land) or district level admin cadres will be appointed as executive magistrates, the instruction said.
Executive magistrates have the power to fine or jail any candidates or supporters for violating the election code of conduct.
According to the Mobile Court Act, the Election Commission has decided to appoint executive magistrates in every constituency.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has deferred the voting day by a week to December 30.
