Pirojpur woman self-reliant through malta farming
PIROJPUR, Nov 10: Piku Mistry, 45, wife of Achintya Kumar Mistry of Gabbari Village in Guarekha Union of Nesarabad Upazila, became self-reliant through malta farming.
Malta farming started few years back, and it is now going on in massive perspective in every upazila of the district. Educated youths are getting involved in its commercial cultivation.
Piku Mistry said she started malta farming four years back on one and a half acres of land in Gabbari Village. She planted 550 seedlings in the first year at her orchard but got no return. In the second year, she earned Taka 50,000 selling the fruit. In the third year, she earned Taka 1.50 lakh, and in this reason she earned Taka 4.50 lakh.
Piku said she used compost fertilisers in her orchard but not pesticides. She sells every kilogram of malta at Taka 100 to wholesalers from her orchard.
She said now her family is self-reliant, and they are living a happy life. Her husband Achintya Kumar Mistry is a listed singer at Barishal Betar and runs a music academy.
She also said, "We got the idea of malta farming from a relative. Besides, we cultivate China orange, different types of lemons, Thai Guava, and mango in the orchard."
A late college teacher Shaymol Mandal inspired them a lot. Besides, local agriculture office provided assistance to them.
Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer Rifath Sikder said malta has become a cash crop in the areas.
