37 fishermen jailed for catching hilsa

A mobile court in Bhola on Friday sentenced 37 fishermen to one month in jail for catching hilsa in the Meghna and Tentulia rivers defying ban on fishing.

The mobile court also fined four under-aged fishermen Tk 5,000 each.

Earlier, Fisheries Department, Coastguard and River Police members  conducted separate raids in Bhola from early hours till noon on Friday and detained 41 fishermen.

They also seized 50 kilograms of hilsa and 10,000 meters current net from the possessions of the fishermen.

The government has imposed a ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of hilsa fish from October 7 to 28.
