Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday told the Awami League National Election Steering Committee at its first meeting that she believes that the countrymen will bring Awami League (AL) to the power for third consecutive term exercising their franchise in the upcoming parliamentary polls considering the development spree of the present government. She, also the Chairman of the Steering Committee, came up with the remark while addressing the inaugural session of the meeting held at the Premier's official residence Ganabhaban in the capital.
At the meeting, lasted for three hours, the Steering Committee decided that poll coordination committees will be formed in every district, Awami League Organising Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim told The Daily Observer.
The coordination committees will be consisted of advisors, president-general secretary of the respective district unit of the party.
The Steering Committee meeting also discussed various electoral issues ranging from election strategy, manifesto to infighting centring the upcoming parliamentary polls, Bahauddin Nasim said. At the meeting, party President Sheikh Hasina warned that nobody, who are engaged in campaigning against the sitting MPs of the party, will get the AL election ticket as such kind of campaign destroys the votes of Awami League, according to Awami League leaders.
They said the Prime Minister instructed the party leaders to stay alert so that nobody of the party could obstruct the programmes of newly formed alliance led by Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and Dr Kamal Hossain. Sheikh Hasina was quoted by the AL leaders to have said that she wanted to see the strength of the alliance. In the inaugural session of the meeting, the Prime Minister said only those who know that they will not win in election, are unhappy. They dream that they will be installed into power by someone, she said. Sheikh Hasina said turning to Uttar para (army) will not bring any fruit as nobody of them has any intention to dethrone us.
Mentioning the life risk, the Prime Minister said, "I can be killed. But nobody will install them into power. Nobody has such mentality. Because we have carried out development works for all; all sees the development." Sheikh Hasina greeted the new alliance led by Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and Dr Kamal Hossain. She said she will request the DMP Commissioner to give permission to the new alliance to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital as the alliance leaders alleged that they have been denied permission. Sheikh Hasina ruled out the allegation of infringing upon the right to freedom of expression and opinion. She, however, at the same time said that the government will take action against those who will spread falsehood, create conflict in the country.
The Awami League President said the party has sets a rare example in the history of Bangladesh that it has been able to keep up its popularity even it is in power for two times in a row. It was possible for the reason that the Awami League government is dedicated to the development of the countrymen and it has reached the benefit of the development to the villages and grassroots too, Sheikh Hasina explained.
The Awami League President termed the upcoming general election very important. She said, "We have started some tests in which, except some, from lawmakers to other party men, all did well." About the BNP, Sheikh Hasina said they have made money during their tenure for which they could appoint lobbyists in US.
