Govt, semi-govt, other agencies owe Tk 1,435cr to Power Ministry
Different ministries, semi-government and non-government agencies owe a total of Tk 1,435 crore to Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry as their outstanding electricity bills.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid disclosed this in parliament on Thursday while responding to a question from Awami League MP Nazrul Islam Babu (Narayanganj-2).
Of the amount, he said a total of Tk 668 crore remains unpaid by different government offices, including ministries, while Tk 766 crore by semi-government and non-government offices.
The minister also presented a list of 43 ministries and semi-government bodies having power bill unpaid.
According to the statistics presented by the junior minister, the Food and Disaster Management Ministry tops the list with outstanding bills of around Tk 97 crore.
Of the other offices, Housing and Public Works Ministry has Tk 95.30 crore outstanding power bills while Home Ministry Tk 64.53 crore, Religious Affairs Ministry Tk 57.32 crore, Health and Family Welfare Ministry Tk 46.96 crore and Education Ministry Tk 37.66 crore.
Nasrul Hamid said they have taken various steps, including distribution of power bills to customers in time, taking legal action against defaulters, holding intra-ministerial meetings, conducting surprise drives and disconnecting power lines to realise the dues. -UNB
