25 houses go under water in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI, Sept 13: At least 25 houses at no. 24 ward Khorbona area in the city have been flooded due to increase in water level in the Padma River following onrush of water from upstream.
Many families of the area have been evacuating their houses while many of them are passing days amid fear.
Enamul Haque, gauge reader of Rajshahi Water Development Board (WDB), said the water level is rising daily. The water level has increased at 2 centimetres in last 24 hours. On Tuesday last, it was 12.16 cm, on Monday last 17.14, on Sunday 17.10 cm and on Saturday 17.4 cm.
Locals feared that they will be helpless if any measures are not taken.
They said water entered some houses in the area. At least 25 to 30 houses have been evacuated already.
After a spot visit, it was found that many people are cooking in their bedroom. Those who have no ability to rent a house are somehow passing their days inside inundated houses.
Nayan Pramanik of the area said they rented a house. The houses of Habib, Hazrat, Abdul Saidur and Liton went under water. They took shelter elsewhere leaving their houses.
Councillor of no. 14 ward Arman Ali claimed that nearly 500 houses went under water. Of them, more than 100 houses have been washed away.
"We have already informed lawmaker of Sadar constituency Fazle Hossain Badsha," the councillor said.
Rajshahi WDB Executive Engineer Mokhlesur Rahman said the water level has increased. So the houses near the riverbank went under water.
"We hope that water will start falling down," he added.
