Tribal people demonstrate for job quota continuation
RAJSHAHI, Sept 11: A protest procession and a rally were held here demanding continuation of five per cent quota for tribal people in government jobs and higher education.
The Central Committee of the Adivasi Chhatro Parishad organised the procession at Shaheb Bazaar Zero Point in Rajshahi City on Monday.
Speakers at the protest rally demanded preservation of the quota for ethnic minority people in government jobs and higher education. They strongly condemned the quota review committee's recommendation for cancellation of quotas for the tribal people.
Speakers also criticised the government for not implementing properly the reserved quota for them and demanded proper and complete implementation for ensuring their higher education and employment.
Speakers said there are quota systems for backward and disadvantaged people in different countries of the world like India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Canada and China.
The student organisation announced a month-long protest programme in every district.
President of Adivasi Chhatro Parishad central committee Nakul Pahan presided over the meeting.
Among others, General Secretary (GS) of National Adivasi Parishad central committee Subhash Chandra Hembram, GS of Rajshahi Metropolitan Committee Andreas Biswas, District Committee GS Susen Kumar Shyamdwara, Joint Convener of Tribal Juba Parishad, district unit, Rabidas, Huran Murmu, National Adivasi Parishad central committee Member and former president of Adivasi Vidyarthi Parishad central committee Bibhuti Bhushan Mahato, Central GS Tarun Munda, Rajshahi University unit Organising Secretary Agustin Kisku, Central Office Secretary Palash Pahan, Women Affairs Secretary Santana Topi and Member Molly Biswas were also present.
