SREEPUR, GAZIPUR, Sept 7: People are suffering much for lack of garbage management system in Sreepur Upazila.
Garbage collected from different places is being dumped beside Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, inside a local reserve forest and on open grounds.
While talked, local people said garbage is being dumped at Gargaria Masterbari area due to lack of dumping station in a first class municipality like Sreepur. Some garbage is being burnt which is increasing commuters' plight and polluting the environment.
On the other hand, garbage collected from Sreepur Bazaar is being dumped on a ground called Gohata while some are being dumped inside reserve forest.
President of Sreepur Bazaar Merchants' Association Ruhul Amin Khan Ratan said, "A cattle haat sits here on each Saturday. Due to lack playground, local children play on the ground on days except the haat day. But the matter of regret is that garbage is being dumped on the ground for last six months. So, the children can't play now and the size of the ground is also reducing. The local businessmen resisted the dumping several times but there was no result. The municipal authority regularly dumps garbage here."
No. 5 Ward Councillor of Sreepur Municipality Dulal Uddin Jilan said people's plight has increased due to dumping of garbage beside the highway. The matter was raised in the upazila monthly meeting several times but no step was taken.
Resident of Masterbari area and Director of A K Memorial Hospital in Mawna Chourasta area Dr Shafiqul Islam said, "We have to cover our noses to prevent the foul smell coming out from the garbage. Due to the dumping of garbage, one portion of the Masterbari Canal has been filled. There is a school within 100 gauges inside the area. We demand stopping of the garbage dumping."
Conservancy Inspector of Sreepur Municipality Zahir Raihan said, "The regretting matter is that there is no place for garbage dumping here. Finding no option, we have to dump those randomly which is creating temporary hazard."
Sreepur Municipality Mayor Alhaz Anisur Rahman said a decision has been taken to dump garbage in a fixed place.
