Economic condition of the country is worsening slowly like diabetic patient, said former NBR chairman Dr Abdul Mazid on Sunday.
“Internal resource collection failed to improve rationally with GDP growth. Failure of this coordination will create a powerless economy like a diabetic patient,” he said.
He came up with this comment at Budget Dialogue arranged by Centre for Policy Dialogue in Dhaka.
Chaired by professor Rehman Sobhan, the programme was addressed among others, by Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, state minister for Finance and Planning M A Mannan, former Commerce Minister Amir Kasru Mahmud Chowdhury, MCCI president Nihad Kabir, CPD fellow Mustafizur Rahman and Rownak Jahan.
Dr Fahmida Khatun, executive director of CPD, presented the keynote paper at the dialogue.
Rownak Jahan said, “Many people termed the budget as pro-polls. There is allocation for marginalised people in all budgets. Budget size extended for social protection, but this is not enough to attract voters. Discrimination among mass people increased during the nine years rules of the government. There is nothing new in budget to attract voters.”
