To encourage the use of environment-friendly jute bags, 5 percent supplementary duty has been imposed on production of all kinds of polythene and plastic bags in the proposed budget in the Parliament in Dhaka.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Thursday proposed imposing five percent supplementary duty as markets are flooded by rampant use of polythene and plastic bags, which are largely responsible for environmental pollution, reports UNB.

Alongside promoting environment-friendly domestics products, the move of proposing supplementary duty on polythene and plastic bags will help check environmental pollution and reduce water-logging problems in Dhaka city.
