Rooppur Plant to produce 20pc electricity: Experts

Nuclear energy experts on Sunday said Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant would strengthen utilization of nuclear technology in social and sustainable economic development.
They said this at a meeting titled 'The Potential of Nuclear Power for Clean Energy and Sustainable Development: A Case Study of Bangladesh,' held at Center for Advanced Research's Science conference room of Dhaka University (DU).
In his welcome speech at the program, university's Nuclear Engineering Department Chairman Md Shafiqul Islam said, "The titled study will generate useful knowledge and inform public perception about nuclear technology."
It also will help to develop agriculture, industries, and medicine sectors and open new windows to hydrogen generation and water desalination opportunities.
He also emphasized public acceptance regarding the Rooppur Power Plant, along with, being conscious about high capital investment, concern of safety, security, proliferation and waste management.
He presented a study regarding public perception on nuclear power, conducted on 400 engineering students from public and privet universities.
In the study, it was found that 67 present of them are aware of nuclear power technology and showed positive attitude. 19 present disagreed and 14 present of them remained neutral.
While presenting the keynote paper, director of Rooppur Nuclear Power Project Md Shawkat Akbar said, "Bangladesh wishes to rely on nuclear energy that will produce up to 20 per cent electricity in the long-term future."
"Russia was chosen as vendor country initially due to its offer to provide substantial funding support for the project" he added.
