BNP ends hunger strike in city 3 hours ahead of schedule

BNP on Wednesday observed token hunger strike across the country demanding immediate release of its Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8.
In the capital, senior leaders and hundreds of activists took part in the hunger that began in front of the National Press Club at 10:00am.
Though the strike was supposed to continue till 4:00pm, BNP had to end it three hours ahead of the schedule after police requested them to move away from the spot.
During the programme, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded immediate release of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
"The hunger strike was supposed to continue until 4:00pm, but we are concluding it upon a request from the authorities concerned," the BNP leader told the protesters around 1:00pm.
"From this programme, we demand that our leader (Khaleda) be released immediately," he said.
Speaking at the programme, BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the government is trying to hold the next national elections keeping BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in jail.
"No election will be held without Khaleda Zia and the BNP," he warned.
BNP leaders and activists began the hunger strike at 10:00am in front of the National Press Club in the presence of a large number of law enforcers. They chanted slogans demanding release of Khaleda Zia.
DU former vice-chancellor Prof Emaj Uddin participated in the hunger strike minutes before the programme ended.
Standing Committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Vice-Chairmen Barkat Ullah Bulu, Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Dr AZM Zahid Hossaon, Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and the leaders of the 20-party alliance, among others, spoke at the programme.
Meanwhile, Pro-BNP lawyers, led by Senior Joint Secretary of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum Sanaullah Mia, observed a token hunger strike on the Metropolitan Judge's Court premises.
Different district and city units of the party also observed hunger strike across the country to press home their demand for immediate release of Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Following the imprisonment of Khaleda Zia last Thursday, BNP carried out a series of peaceful protest programmes on the streets.
Party sources said they will announce fresh agitation programme across the country soon.
In Chittagong, leaders and activists of BNP Chittagong district south, north and city units observed hunger strike on the premises of Nasiman Bhaban on Wednesday, demanding release of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia, reports our staff correspondent.
The hunger strike began at 10:00am and continued until 4:00pm.
Speaking at the venue, leaders of the local units of BNP demanded immediate release of Khaleda Zia.
Mahbubur Rahman Shamim, divisional organising secretary of BNP, Abu Sufian, acting president of city BNP, Prof Yunus Chowdhury of the district north unit, and local BNP leader Nazimuddin Ahmed spoke.
