A manoeuvre exercise of Bangladesh Army "Operation Bagrothaba" was held at Swarna Dweep alias Jahaijjar Char in Noakhali on Sunday.
The exercise was organised under the management of the 52 Brigade Group of 17 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. Brig Gen Kaiser Malik led the exercise. Beside, infantry, armoured and artillery forces, all other arms services also took part in the exercise. In the exercise, many modern weapons and equipment were used.
Also, as a special force, 1st Para-Commando Battalion Paratrooper of Ad Hoc Para Commando Brigade, Army Aviation Group, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force provide important assistance in this exercise.
Maj Gen Md Rashed Amin, GOC, 33 Infantry Division and Area Commander, Comilla Area, Maj Gen Shameem Uz Zaman, GOC, 17th Infantry Division, Jalalabad Cantonment, Syhlet District and Commander of Chittagong Naval Area Rear Admiral M Abu Ashraf were present among others.
The island, popularly known as the Jahaijjar Char, surfaced in 1978 in Noakhali district. Swarna Dweep is situated in the Meghna estuary and close to Bay of Bengal. Situated over a three-meter height from the sea level, the island is now 28 kilometer long and 14 kilometer wide in area. It lies about 4 km to the south of the Noakhali district mainland and nearly 4.5 km west and about 13.5 km north-east of Hatiya. Initially, it was named 'Island Ruhulamin', but subsequently came to be known as Jahaijjar Island.
The inaccessible island had been a safe haven for organised criminal gangs and pirates for long and had disrupted the activities of the civil administration.
According to 33 infantry divisions, the island was renamed as 'Swarna Dweep' and the government allocated it to the Bangladesh Army in 2012 for training as well as development of the island for habitation, improved law and order and forestation.
From 2014 Bangladesh Army conducted a large-scale troop exercise on the Island. There is a plan to set up a full-fledged exercise and training center there. The training support facilities being built is expected to raise the Army's professional efficiency.
On January 7 in 2016, Bangladesh Army conducted its winter exercise on the island, attended by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina inaugurated a multipurpose cyclone shelter centre.
