Detainee dies under police custody in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR, Jan 13: A man allegedly died under police custody after Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested 13 gamblers including the deceased from Boyra Bazaar in Sharishabari Upazila here early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Nazim Uddin, 47, son of late Azimuddin Sikdar, of Shalina Village under Sadar Upazila in Tangail District.
As a number of people were involved in gambling at the bazaar at midnight, a team of DB police raided there at 2:30am. Sensing the presence of police, the gamblers started running away but police chased and arrested 13 gamblers including Nazim Uddin, said Sademuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur DB.
Soon after the detention, the arrestee Nazim fell sick, and he was immediately rushed to Jamalpur General Hospital where on-duty Medical Officer Hasanur Bari Shishir declared him dead, the OC said.
Contacted, Dr. Shishir said the detainee was brought to the hospital died at 3:45am.
"No external injury marks were found in the body. He might have died of heart attack or brain stroke," Dr. Shishir said, adding that the actual reason behind the death would be known after an autopsy.
Meanwhile, an inquest over the death of the man was done in presence of Executive Magistrate Padmason Singh that did not find any injury mark in the deceased's body, said the DB OC.
The body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
