Japanese man held with 11kg gold at Dhaka airport

A Japanese national was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital with 11 kg gold worth Tk 5.50 crore early Saturday.
Tipped off, Customs officials made the arrest intercepting the Japanese at the green channel of the airport and recovered 11 gold bars, each weighing 1 Kg, strapped to his body, said Assistant Commissioner of Customs (Preventive team) at the airport Taijul Islam.
The detainee is Kengo Shibata, 42. The Japanese national landed at the airport by a Regent Airways flight from Singapore around 12:40am on Saturday, Taijul said.
The Customs officials handed the detainee over to airport police with which a smuggling case was also registered.
Police will produce the Japanese national before the Dhaka Court today, OC (Investigation) of Airport Police Station Md Ezaz Shafi told The Daily Observer.
