14 dead birds, air gun seized in Barguna

BARGUNA, Dec 7: Police, in a drive, seized at least 14 dead birds and an air gun from Baithakata area in Sadar Upazila here on Wednesday.
Police said a gang of poachers and hunters, who are active in the upazila, traps and kills dove, heron and other migratory birds from different areas and sell those at local markets.
Md. Masuduzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Barguna Police Station said, "The criminals had been doing this illegal act for long. On Wednesday, some people informed us that hunters were killing migratory birds at Lakurtala area. When we went there, the criminal gang fled away leaving behind dead birds and air gun."
Mushfiq Arif, a local journalist challenged a hunter but he fled away leaving behind the air gun and the dead birds.
"I saw a local student Sumon collecting dead birds from a pond of Baithakata area. When I challenged him, he fled away. We informed police and they seized six dead herons, seven doves and a kingfisher and an air gun," he added.
Locals alleged that a section of people buy the dead birds to eat them. The hunters use current nets, hanging nets, poisonous baits and hooks to trap the birds. Sometimes they shoot the birds.
A case would be lodged in this connection, the OC added.
